He served as the 31st Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 2015 until August, 2019, when he retired from the Navy after 37 years of service. Richardson was the Director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program from 2012 until 2015. He was awarded the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Inspirational Leadership Award for his time in command of USS Honolulu. Richardson served on teams that have been awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and other awards for outstanding team performance. His staff assignments include naval aide to the President, the teacher for prospective submarine commanding officers, the Joint Staff Operations Directorate, and the Director of Strategy and Policy at U.S. Richardson also commanded Submarine Development Squadron 12, Submarine Group 8, NATO Submarine Allied Naval Forces South, and the U.S. Marshall (SSBN 654), USS Salt Lake City (SSN 716), and he commanded USS Honolulu (SSN 718) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
